In a perfect health care world, you wouldn’t get stuck sitting in a waiting room. Your highly experienced doctor would be ready to spend adequate time with you in a soothing, private location. You could even make your appointment for a convenient time after work, or on the weekend. Sound incredible? Maybe, but it is happening right here in Sioux Falls. This concept of patient-focused care was one of the driving forces behind Dr. Chandar Singaram’s decision to start his own practice, which accepts all major insurances. A gastroenterologist, or digestive system specialist, Dr.Singaram has 15+ years of experience. He notes, “I decided to start this clinic so that I can focus on each patient as an individual and give them the time and attention each person needs. Working in an independent clinic, I’m able to give the patients unbiased recommendations and able to choose the best tests and medications utilizing all of the region’s expertise. I believe this allows us to customize and manage their condition the best possible way and deliver the health care in an effective manner.” Having trained and taught in prestigious universities like University of Wisconsin and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Singaram actively supports teaching new generations of physicians and other health care professionals. “I’m an assistant professor of medicine at the USD School of Medicine and I’m involved in teaching medical students and residents year around.” As a board member of the Dakota-Minnesota Chapters of Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation (CCFA), he describes, “We’re involved with various medical education programs – including medical seminars for patients with particular diseases.” Flexible office hours, including evening and weekend options; 24-hour consultation access to patients and primary care physicians; a private, easily accessible clinic and comfortable exam rooms; computerized medical records, all combine to form Dr. Singaram’s vision of how health care should be delivered. Being an MBA-Health Care student at University of Sioux Falls, Dr. Singaram, notes, “It’s been shown that computerized medical records reduce mistakes, increase transparency in charting and improve patient outcomes. This clinic is fully operational with electronic medical records.” Even though there can be a long delay to see specialists, such as a gastroenterologist, currently in Sioux Falls, Dr.Singaram notes that his “goal is to offer patients appointment times as soon as possible, and when the patient wants.” He adds, “We’re also open late on Wednesdays and certain Saturday mornings to accommodate special patient needs.” Equipped with specifically welltrained GI support staff, Dr. Singaram’s vision is becoming a reality. Having experienced first-hand how compassionate care can make a world of difference to both the patient and the patient’s family, Dr. Singaram says, “My daughter was born with multiple disabilities and this is when I really understood how important it is to be compassionate. It made me see what the medical system can make you go through. It made me realize that a few moments of compassion can make a huge difference for the patient and their family.” Patients may be referred from their family physicians or may self refer.
